ABOUT MENTORSHIP

Workshops’ participants on character animation with Tobias Fouracre will practice the various stages of work on all stages of shooting from the animators perspective: from the analysis of the shot, through the shooting a reference video, “blocking” or key-frame preparations for the shot, to animating the final shot.

Paul Mathot

PAUL MATHOT

PUPPET MAKING GROUP

Paul Mathot (1959) originally studied architecture in Amsterdam. However, after two years, he decided to switch to an art study instead. In 1982, while working on his portfolio, he got the opportunity to work at the well-known Dutch stop motion studios, the Joop Geesink Film Studios. It was there that he first came into contact with stop motion, which has been an integral part of his work life ever since.

In the two years of his study of architecture, he learned to work with all kinds of machines and gained a lot of material knowledge. Especially in plastics, which he benefited from later in his career.
At the Geesink Studios, he learned a lot about making stop motion puppets. He became so adept at it that he turned it into his expertise. Especially the application of new production techniques and the use of the latest materials ensure that the stop motion puppets he now makes are of high quality and creatively versatile.
After 14 fantastic years at Geesink, he decided to continue independently and founded the studio Pedri Animation in 1995, together with Peter Mansfelt and Patrick Raats. As of 2018, Paul is the sole owner of the studio.

His stop motion studio is located near Amsterdam. Pedri works with the most talented people, each specialized in their own field. The studio has workshops with advanced tools for making the puppets, props, and sets, and animation facilities with camera, light, and motion control equipment

ABOUT MENTORSHIP

Workshops are aimed to familiarize the participants with the process of creating and with the techniques of making animation puppets.
Participants will learn all the rules that you need to know to understand to create a design of a puppet that will be possible to build, animatable and useful. Paul will explain how puppet is constructed, costume is made or how to achieve natural facial expressions.

The basis of the class will be practice. At home and during the class in Lodz, each participant will build a selected part of a puppet, and together they will create one or two puppets.

ABOUT MENTORSHIP

A step-by-step guide through the producing of a stop-motion project (short and art-house), beginning from developing the idea till post-production and premiere.
What is the main objective of your project? What are the timelines and deadlines? Where to start? How to start? With whom to start? What is pre-production in animation? And what else needs to be taken into account in the planning? These are key questions you need to be able to answer in order to properly assess the scope of your project.

The key to success in any project is to start with a solid foundation on which to build. Without proper definition, budgeting and more, you will encounter many problems later on. Missed deadlines, unattractive animations and budget overruns are all symptoms of failure at this stage.

During the workshop, Kerdi Oengo, who has produced over 40 films in her career, will guide participants through the entire animation pipeline. From development and its importance to Calculating the budget and splitting it up.
